Women Executives, Is “Totally Obsessed By…” Helping or Hurting Your Professional Image?

Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!

Recently, I’ve noticed an increasing trend on LinkedIn.

Profiles are full of leaders claiming to be ‘totally obsessed’ with innovation, leadership, or transformation. It sounds passionate, but is it truly elevating their executive presence? Or is it subtly working against them?

So, whatt is their Leadership brand saying?

"Totally obsessed by innovation." "Obsessed with leadership development." "Completely obsessed with driving change."

What does “obsessed” really mean?

Let’s take a moment to reconsider: What does “obsessed” really mean? And how does it affect the strategic leadership image you want to project as a senior executive?

Every word you use to define yourself at the senior leadership level carries weight. High-performing executives don’t just project enthusiasm; they project authority, vision, and strategic depth.

The way you articulate your commitment matters.

There’s a critical difference between being profoundly committed and being ‘obsessed.’ What is your Leadership Brand saying?

1. Strategic Passion vs. Overcommitment

There’s a critical difference between being profoundly committed and being ‘obsessed.’ Passion fuels leadership, but obsession can signal a narrow, all-consuming focus. Top executives are expected to manage complexity, maintain perspective, and operate with strategic intent.

Thought Starter: Is your passion framed as a driving force or an all-consuming focus? How can you adjust your messaging to emphasize passion while showcasing the extent of your strategic focus?

2. Focus on Impact, Not Intensity: Lead with Purpose

The best leaders don’t emphasize how much they love something, but emphasize the value they create. Instead of signaling intensity, your messaging must highlight the strategic outcomes your work delivers.

Leadership is about driving change intentionally, not being consumed by a single aspect of your work.

“While Obsession is personal, Impact is influential.” S.O

Consider these shifts:

  • Instead of: “Obsessed with business transformation.” Try: “Driving business transformation that scales growth and impact.”
  • Instead of: “Obsessed with leadership development.” Try: “Equipping executives with the leadership skills that create lasting influence.”

This language demonstrates your leadership as results-driven and forward-thinking, rather than fixating on the intensity of your interests.

Thought Starter: How does your messaging highlight leadership results over personal intensity?

Leadership Presence is About Balance, Not Extremes.

3. Leadership Presence is About Balance, Not Extremes

High-level leadership requires adaptability and the ability to operate across multiple dimensions.

‘Obsessed’ suggests tunnel vision rather than the strategic clarity required to lead with influence. The strongest executive brands communicate control, perspective, and the ability to navigate complexity.

Thought Starter: Does your leadership presence reflect clarity, adaptability, and strategic balance?

Language shapes perception. The words you use on LinkedIn and beyond influence how you’re seen by key decision-makers, potential collaborators, and those who determine leadership opportunities. It reflects your leadership brand.

Instead of framing your passion as an obsession, shift your focus to the results you drive, your vision, and the strategic leadership you bring.

After all, a strong executive presence is never about intensity.

It’s about leverage.

Where does your profile stand?

Certainly, the words you choose shape how others perceive your leadership.
